Curium was born in 1944, when a Berkeley team turned a powerful beam of alpha particles on plutonium. Its discovery helped complete the early map of the actinide series—and honored two pioneers of radioactivity.

01 / The discovery

A few atoms, made deliberately.

By the early 1940s, scientists had learned that nuclear reactions could create elements not found in meaningful amounts on Earth. The next step was to make heavier atoms one controlled collision at a time.

The reaction: plutonium-239 was bombarded with alpha particles—helium nuclei accelerated by the 60-inch cyclotron at Berkeley. The resulting atoms were identified as element 96, later known as curium.

The work was carried out by Glenn T. Seaborg, Ralph A. James, and Albert Ghiorso, with contributions from the wider wartime Berkeley team. Their first sample was extraordinarily small, but its radioactive decay provided a distinct signature.

Curium followed americium in the growing family of transuranium elements. The sequence gave researchers a clearer understanding of the actinides and supported the arrangement of the periodic table that is familiar today.

At the University of California, Berkeley, researchers bombard plutonium-239 with alpha particles and produce curium-242.

1945

The result enters the record

The discovery is documented while much nuclear research remains classified during the Second World War.

1946

Discovery is announced

After declassification, the scientific community learns of element 96 and its first isotope.

1947

The name is accepted

Curium becomes the official name, following the convention established by neighboring elements americium and europium.

1950s—

Isotope chemistry expands

New isotopes, including curium-244, make it possible to study the element’s chemistry, decay, and potential scientific uses.

A tribute to the Curies.

Curium is named for Marie Skłodowska Curie and Pierre Curie, whose work transformed the study of radioactivity. The name also mirrors americium, named for the Americas and positioned above curium in the actinide sequence.
